The Duchies are a construct of the Church of the One, largely coterminous with the ancient lands of the King's banner-men, but organized according to the words of the Prophet (as expounded by many monks). The duality of Duke and High Lord is a feature of the Crownlands...in other lands of Man, either the Church has organized duchies, or more ancient divisions exist. Each Duke of Obrith carries at least two titles: his title as Duke of a Duchy, and High Lord of one of the Ancient Fiefs.}
